WHO WE ARE
North Shore Center for Speech, Language & Swallowing Disorders is a state-of-the-art practice offering speech/language pathology services to clients from birth to geriatrics. Although our main office is located in Garden City, New York, we also offers speech pathology services in in your home as well as in various settings including hospitals, outpatient and rehabilitation centers and nursing homes. We also offer in home Early Intervention services. NSC accepts health insurance, private pay, Medicaid and Medicare. We provide a full range of services focused on improving a client’s speech, language, voice, cognitive and/or swallowing abilities.

NSC is staffed by a team of highly skilled speech/language pathologists who are licensed and certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). No speech therapy assistants are ever used. All personnel have been extensively trained in conducting thorough evaluations and developing individualized treatment plans. Ongoing education is essential at NSC. We believe in a team approach to evaluation and treatment and work collaboratively with the primary care physician, client, families, and other professionals in order to maximize outcomes.

Donna Riley Matusiak, the founder and director, has over 20 years experience teaching and working with infants, children and adults in a variety of settings including universities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, home care agencies, early intervention programs and schools. She graduated from St. John’s University in New York with a master of arts in speech/ language pathology. Ms. Matusiak is a New York State licensed speech-language pathologist and holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Ms. Matusiak is a member of ASHA’s special interest divisions; Neurophysiology and Neurogenic Speech and Language Disorders, Voice and Voice Disorders, Administration and Supervision, and Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders, Long Island Speech and Hearing Association (LISHA), and the New York State Speech, Language and Hearing Association (NYSSLHA). She is a member of St. Joseph Hospital Performance Improvement Committee, St. Joseph Hospital Stroke Committee, the Long Island Medical Reserve Corps and the New York State Fraternal Order of Police- Police Surgeons Lodge. Additionally, Ms. Matusiak served as an adjunct professor at Long Island University, CW Post Campus in New York.

Ms. Matusiak has earned multiple ACE awards for continuing education in her field. She is certified in Vital-stimulation, Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), and is proficient in Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) and Surface Electromyography (SEMG).

Melissa Marcolini, Chief Operating Officer, has worked at North Shore Center for Speech, Language & Swallowing Disorders for over 15 years. She has experience working with infants, children and adults in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, early intervention programs, nursing homes, home care agencies, and school settings. Melissa is a New York State licensed speech-language pathologist who holds a Clinical Certificate of Competence from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). She has served as chief clinical coordinator and, along with the director functions in a supervisory capacity. Ms. Marcolini graduated from St. John’s University in New York with a master’s of arts in speech/language pathology. She is a member of ASHA’s special interest divisions; Neurophysiology and Neurogenic Speech and Language Disorders and Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Ms. Marcolini serves as an advisory board member at Molloy College where she has taught in the speech/language pathology department. Ms. Marcolini has conducted research in in the areas of geriatrics and swallowing, which was submitted to The Journal of Gerontology. She has advanced training in swallowing disorders, modified barium swallow studies, and tracheostomies.

WHO WE SERVE

Adult Program

Our New York State Licensed & Certified Speech-Language Pathologists are specially trained to assess, diagnose, and treat disorders of communication and swallowing. North Shore Center for Speech, Language, & Swallowing Disorders' Clinicians work closely with each patient and their family to establish and maintain improved communication and/or swallowing abilities.

Early Intervention Program - Birth - 3 Years
North Shore Center for Speech, Language & Swallowing Disorders is a New York State approved provider of Early Intervention services under contract with Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Our program provides complete evaluations and therapy for children aged birth to 3 years, who may qualify due to a disability or developmental delay. This is a family centered program. There is no out of pocket cost to participate in this program. The Early Intervention program is funded and regulated by the New York State Department of Health and the Nassau County and Suffolk County Departments of Health.
